Update: As of February 2022, COLUMBIA, S.C. (WPDE) — State Rep. Cezar McKnight (D-Williamsburg) has filed a bill that would give magistrates the power to issue temporary ex parte orders of protection. The bill is in response to a woman killed in Florence.

“Taylor McFadden Robinson should still be with us,” McKnight said. “She was a victim of abuse who could have been saved if magistrates had the power to issue orders of protection. My bill gives them this power in certain circumstances so that individuals like Ms. Robinson can receive protection immediately.”

Under McKnight’s legislation, the ex parte orders of protection would last for seven days. Within those seven days, the magistrate can hold a hearing. At this hearing, a restraining order can be issued for one year.
